Imagine getting a bag of shit on your 12th hour or a hospitalized? You guys dont know what you asking for. This only works in normal departments where cop collars and drops off.

Or getting ordered for a 12 hour transit tour on your last rdo.

I personally dont think the tours alone will turn everyone into a positive happy employee who loves coming to work. After all, of course everyones disgruntled. Were not running a daisy farm here.

In regards to 12 hours it is a long day, but it pays off when you dont have to come into work that extra day or 2. It would also allow for more coverage day to day. We have a disgruntled department, i think a modern chart would be taking this department into the right direction. Definitely would not solve everything. But having less appearances to work saves us money on commuting and more time at home which would help boost morale. A lot of guys leave this job for a better quality of life in work schedule alone.

yeah until you get a 12 hour OT hit on your rdo

Port Authority has the best system I've seen, they can hit you for doubles or force you to stay but your RDOs are untouchable. Can you imagine how the morale in this department would skyrocket if that happened?

The best chart is 10 hour tours with steady 3 on 3 off. Regardless, I am confident the job will manage to fuck it up somehow and make the chart worse than what it is now.

I do think that 10hour chart would be easier to implement because they can still keep the 3 squad chart rotation with some creativity 3 on 3 off or 3 on 4 off etc but my question would be is does the department have to give a 12 hour rdo or can they do a 8/10hr rdo notification? Regardless as the poll will decide i think majority of department would preference the modern chart. I do think its a step in the right direction either way

We get a full shift if we get ordered in on an RDO. So Id assume wed get a 10 hour hit if we work 10 hour tours.

Part of the reason wed change tour length is to provide the same coverage with the same amount of cops. I dont know if you can do 3 shifts with 10 hour tours. Going to 12 hour tours would of course knock out a shift and personnel from that shift can be moved to one of the new ones. But 12 hours is gonna suck. I dont care how many days off you give me. Getting stuck doing a double, or handling a late bag of shit and then coming in for your regular 12 hour tour the next day will suck. I think the people who advocate 12 hours havent been on patrol in a while.

There are other ways to ensure a better QoL for us without waiting on the union/city to perform a miracle.

Majority of nassau does 12hrs. 2 on 3 off and then 3 on 4 off rotation, for everyday they work they get an additional day off. They also have to giveback 3 days throughout the year at the officers decision. But yes they are very very happy with their schedules.
Midnights unless things changed did 10hours 4 on 4 off.

Mta police does 3 on 4 off with 1 giveback day every 4th week.
With new contract they opened some slots for 10hour tours, 4 on 3 off. 10hr slots are guaranteed weekends off

4 day RDO is sweet. You would think with all the suicides they would try to implement this

12 hour tours suck to work unless you live 10 minutes or less from work but with an hour commute both ways turns that 12 into 14+ hours. 12 hour tours do drastically increases workforce and quickly though. There are units that work 12 hour tours on the job now they say training like the 8 hour range suck for them because they have to take 4 hours lost time or go to work for 4 hours after they shoot.

Few spots on the job do 12 hours yes. They can get creative with range/training days with modern chart. Once it is in effect they will have some figuring out to do. But over time it will be done just like everything else thats new that has to get implemented.
Someone mentioned on here that transit and in recent days patrol guys are doing 12 hour tours almost everyday. Its not anything new to a lot of us.

Does anyone honestly think suicides are due to the job? Its all family divorce shit and availability of a firearm.

Dude the job, and the way it's designed to destroy your individuality is a huge contributing factor in the suicides.

Both. Shitty home life and work life. Cops see no out. The job does a great job at making a person miserable. Forced ot everyday is a easy example. Lets not take away anything from the job, its not an easy job. We know what we signed up for thick skin mentality is part of policing. But i dont hear of mta, papd, suffolk/nassau cops killing themselves. Why? Were a bigger dept? Not entirely true. Its because they have a system in place where they care enough to give their cops what they want and a better quality of life. Crime is up. Quality cops wanna work somewhere better, experienced cops want to retire, no one is urging their friends/family to take this job. The job needs us more then ever and they know what they have to do to make things better.

What do you think causes those divorces?

Its not fair to blame this job for someone committing suicide.

With that said, you cant say that divorces and family issues arent because of this job. Unless youre in an admin spot its not physically possible that the job cant be to blame for atleast part of these problems.
