This is a good topic. Can someone share some insight. In particular your vacation picks when getting promoted. Do they work with you or your picks are null and void.
Every admin lt is different. Some make you pick from what is available, some will try and honor your picks. If its Christmas or thanksgiving, forget it. If you have a trip booked and can produce proof Im sure most will work with you, but obviously no guarantees.
its good to see that the majority like being promoted. I've been hearing so many bad things lately, especially about those who left units or good spots to take the promo. Its just so easy to be negative about this job (for good reason) that these results surprise me.

It's only good If u are in a cushy gig or tucked away no sgt will say they are happy in a patrol command. This job sucks and has been worse and worse each day as years go by
All depends, when I caught up with people from my BMOC, some said their picks were honored and others said they were not. My picks were not honored and I had to re-pick with regards to availability. However my IVDs were honored.
Edit btw, if your Admin Lt goes by the book, you cant take picks from fellow Sergeants who left the command either.

Only thing true about that statement is patrol sucks. Being on patrol as a supv vs a cop is 1000x better and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You get more responsibility because that's what you signed up for but you also get more freedom where you are not going to 20 jobs a night. Now if you do 4x in a busy command yes you will be working but still have the freedom you wouldn't have as a cop.
Patrol sgt>patrol cop by a mile. If you are coming from a great gig you will struggle and wonder why you did this in the beginning. Just remember its a marathon not a sprint, the turnover rate is so high in the sgt rank on patrol that even if you dont go back to a detail, if you are semi competent and hard working you wont be in a squad for long.
I am at a busy command and came from a not cushy but elite gig as a detective. Been 7 months and Not looking to leave patrol anytime soon either. I did tons of tour changes in the beginning. Sometimes my week would go day tour midnight then a four by and then a day tour and so on. My command is busy but does not have a lot of sgts so i get a lot of overtime. Some of my friends who are sgts at other commands complain that they dont get any ot at all. I had to pick new AVPs my old picks didnt count.
I loved being a cop and now I love being a sergeant. Cops do call me for everything because thats what I get paid for. And given the environment we are in now, I rather they call me. Sometimes i dont know things and they got it covered for me. Most of the time cops get it done. And they need good supervisors. I try to get answers for them, motivate them, and protect them. As a cop, I knew how much that meant so I try to be that for them and it makes all the difference for me.

I have another question. For those who are newly promoted. Are you in a busy command or slow. Is it better to work in a busy command as a boss. I am currently in A house. Busy is an understatement! But truthfully it keeps me busy and the day goes by quick!! What are your thoughts?
Why would it be better to work in a busy command I work in a c house it's a retirement home I watch netflix all day on desk and patrol is a joke here..if your a cowboy and wanna be out there than a busy command is for you. No one wants to do **** everyone is out to protect their pensions this job is a jail term now when u get ur pension u are free and safe

No one is a cowboy. It was just a question. Relax. If I had it my way I would go start to a detail from Bmoc where I can get 40 hours a month...but I know that would never happen! In my wildest dreams!! Just wanted to know people who are promoted take on it. Some like busy ... most prefer slow.
One of the positive things about working in an A house, is its a lot easier to get a day off, because more bosses are working. However, that may not even be true anymore since this entire department is short. But I worked both an A & C as a supervisor. And would prefer the C. Even though all my 28s get denied, I still rather relax at work and not get stressed out, than have my blood pressure through the roof for 9 hours. The bigger things you should think about if deciding where you want to go (if you have a phone call), is 1. Your commute to work (LIRR, subway, parking, traffic etc). 2. The CO/XO at that command. Yes I know that COs and XOs generally arent at a command for over two years, but even a year is a long time when youre a rookie Sgt. new to a command with bosses that dont look out for you. 3. Food. I dont cook, so never really bring food to work unless its left overs. I need to work in a command with good food. Im sure people will give you other advice. But these 3 pieces of advice is what I would give to an upcoming Sgt going into bmoc.
I also worked in an A house and C house as a supervisor and it all depends on what your used to and how much OT you like. I thought going to an A house would be great bc of all the bosses but it's totally not true and like the other person said the entire city is short. So the only good thing about an A house is you could easily hit 40 a month if you really wanted to with all the overtime that's tossed around. That being said your overall quality of life is significantly better in a C house. You can relax, do whatever you want and pretty much expect to clock out and go home at eot. There will definitely be a lot more internal drama and maybe even letter writers, but I still preferred the slower command just bc my everyday was significantly less stressful.
I've been a sergeant since 2014. I've had a few days where I wondered why the hell I got promoted, but WAY MORE DAYS I was glad I was promoted. This is a bosses job. If you don't see that you're blind.
