Due to the times being what they are, I would suggest retirement.

It all depends on persons finances. If your good financially than run for the doors because times are not good but if not financially good than take it and work 5more years.

It is gonna come down to finances. In the past 175 years this  was not and probably will not be the last time cops get bottles thrown at them or get thrown under the bus by politicians, after all. Staying longer than 20  in any rank will make a positive change to your pension for the rest of your life . Good luck in whatever path you take!

Take the promotion. You did the work. It could open you up for different jobs when you retire.

If you are making ot now.  Then a promo financially might not make sense. Most places as a new Sgt you are not making OT Especially with these budget cuts

also SBA dental and benefits are worse than Pba. So you would loose this as well.

you would have to work 4 complete years and would loose 80 k  20 k a year with the promo before top pay

if no OT to consider,  take the promo

In this atmosphere, I would get the hell out. Period.

There is only one but.

How are you and your family financially. If you are good, if you are comfortable, just leave man. If you need that pension boost though then just ride it out.

Id run for the door even if I was "okay" with my pension and with finances. Not risking **** in todays atmosphere.

Just do what's best for you. If you're asking this question, you pretty much already know what you want to do.

 This^

if ot is not a concern for you, take the promo and see where you land. If you land on patrol, just leave. If not, stay for top pay Sgt.

Better yet, retire one day in rank so you can put the title on your resume

I would retire and pay for a class on punctuation.
