I came over from the 2011 sgt forum where I'm tired of the negative comments and childish bull****. 

that being said I wanted to start a topic to maybe educate some of the cops that will get made soon, and maybe a "for your information"  for some of the people that have been promoted. I'm a decently active cop from a pretty busy command, I have had some great boss' and I like to think I learned alot from them and hope to take some of that with me when I eventually get made. 

what do you guys think makes a good boss?

Don't give any special treatment to ass kissers or good looking females...or males if that's your thing. Also always praise in public and criticize in private. Be friendly with your cops but make sure they follow orders. Last, if you don't know something don't feel as though you must pretend you do. You are allowed to say you don't know and ask another boss.

P.S if you have 25 collars for your entire career don't ever tell the guy with 200+ collars that he needs to pick up his activity and write more summonses. Odds are that the other cops will see you as a hypocrit and hate you. This I'm saying because I have had bosses with 13 arrests for their entire career tell me that I need to do more for the squad and write more tags. And don't micro manage so much. You are there to supervise grown men, not make decisions for them. Allow them to do their job and make decisions at jobs. You should asses wether or not the decision is a good one and won't jam you or them up. As a supv you should protect your cops and have a sense of pride and ownership that comes with your squad. Also don't ever give your squad a ****ty assignment. When you do the roll call hook up your squad or they won't do **** for you.

And finally when you go to a new command don't ever start your convos with "in my command we did things like this" it's not your old Command and those words make you look egotistical. So lose the ego and eat some humble pie...

Im just trying to start a discussion other than the same negative bull on the other forums that would educate myself and everyone else. Everyone has opinions and its a fact that when a new sgt comes to a command everyone wants to know first where he/she came from. @ doctorjay. Im saying that since everything is based on numbers here I would rather have a boss that was active busting balls about activity rather than a guy that was a complete hairbag and skated by.

Everyone has known a boss that has no business being a boss. I'm trying my damndest to not be "that guy"

i know what doesnt make a good boos. a boss that grabs a p/u gun collar when most cops would look the other way. A boss that has not gotten any ccrbs and no disciplinary action. A boss that is well liked by his cops. A boss that is effecient at maintaining the desk. What makes a good boss in the eyes of brass is if your squad is treading water and not lagging behind. this is now what being a boss has come too.

Many factors make you a good boss. Just because you're good to your cops doesn't necessarily make you a good boss. I'm still a rookie sgt and I believe I'm great to my cops but still i make mistakes. So I would say a good boss treats his/her cops with respect and able to make good decisions and able to protect their cops with those decisions.
