Captain exam


The way things have been going is hard to tell about monthly promotions. Realistically what number do you guys think they will reach, and are You guys taking it? seems List will expire next year.

A lot of people of the current lieutenant list once be eligible because you have to be a Lt on the first day of the exam. They havent even made it to half of the list and the department averages ~150 Lt promotions a year.

 They average about 150 Lt promotions a year. If the current list expires in dec 2027, then my guess is 800ish before the list expires. But if there is a hiring freeze (depending on the mayoral election) then they might not even get to 700ish on the list.

Guys I wasnt trying to start a panic about our list getting cut. Just pointing out that the captains list will expire and wandering how many of us will get a chance to take the captain exam.

Ideally the number of Lts that take cpt exam is lower than other rank , example Sgt to Lt. I would assume the Lt list moves quite quickly to get a bigger pool of those who can take the exam!

Hopefully this is the case, I feel like when they gave the 2017 Lt exam they put in a couple of huge sgt classes to burn through the Sgts list, lets hope they try to do the same and they try to get a big pool of candidates.

Both promotional classes start in about a month and we are not even halfway through the list yet. If June 2026 is the correct date that Elite is putting out, we would probably be around list number 750-800. A few hundred people on the lieutenant list will miss the cut off.

There is absolutely no way they cut 1/3 of this list. Or any of it for that matter.

The city can extend any list for basically any reason. This one wont need that. A couple months of 0s and its Armageddon for people on here. lol.

This is a misrepresentation of the material on the test and what it actually tests. If it was a test more so on the topics of importance vs what it actually is, a test of tricks and deception, many people would pass and do well. People spend alot of time studying for these tests and and know the material but that's not what the city cares to test. So to say # 800 + should not be a LT is not telling the whole story.

Typical representation of someone who uses this job to define the success of their entire lives. I can assure you that someone who scores a 90 raw score or someone who scores a 60 raw score doesnt make the former nor the latter a better supervisor. Yes, someone putting in more work to study and memorizing the material well should be rewarded by getting promoted first, but ive found that many of the clowns who attempt to shit on guys who passed on a curve are guys who couldnt handle themselves on a desk in an A house, or even handle a shitty EDP job for that matter. A mess on the streets. Secondly, many of these guys are also the guys who dont have a life or eyes for anything outside of this job. These are the people who make our job difficult by somehow thinking that their higher score on a multiple choice test somehow makes them more intelligent, when in fact many are not. These are also the guys who dont retire as work is the only place they feel empowered in. Lets stop shitting on the next person, it doesnt make you a better person.

A Lt who scored a 90 and a Lt who scored a 70 are both Lts.

Ill wait for the triggered responses.

 idk what you're saying, but I personally know people in the 900's who scored very close to a 70 raw... so you're statement is false.

i've said it time and time again - the difference between scoring a 95 and a 70 is NOTHING. It is such a pointless argument. I'd rather have a boss who knows how to supervise a search warrant, have the balls to speak up to their superiors to stick up for their cops, and doesn't mind talking to the desk officer for a hand. Sounds like you'd rather the boss who knows who to notify to collect metal barriers, or who to contact if the now defunct fluorescent bulb is out in your office.

The difference between a 95 lt and a 70 lt is probably 3 to 4 years in seniority which equals top pay quicker which equals most likely one chance at captain rank eligibility. Some of you have no ideas about how these tests are generated. The tests are written by ur fellow umos. They are chosen w different bureau assignments, from different boroughs, different ethnicities and different sexes. From there they are given a list of topics. These topics are not patrol guide related but are more general. For instance a topic may be supervision during an emergency incident. From there the test takers must generate a question related to this topic. So Ill choice a supervisor question during an emergency train evacuation hence satisfying the broad topic I mentioned. In essence the exam is based on the panel that is chosen to write your exam. Pick a panel who feel no one should pass unless they know every lil detail and you get a crazy exam. Pick sensible ppl who want to write a fair exam and you get a fair exam. Pick a panel of know it alls and you get an hard exam. Dcas realized this and hired an outside company that now weights the exam questions. Hence why picking a group of total aholes isnt really an issue anymore bc the questions can be weighed based on statistical data. Pre this method Dcas tried to wriye questions based on a supervisor book but that resulted in the terrible Lt exam w all the throw outs. After that you had the 2015 Lt exam that had a terrible board write the exam resulting in an impossible test. Hence why you have now what you have w weighing exams.

If you are at the bottom of the LT list, would you bother to study for the Capt exam? I dont think everyone on the last LT class got to study for the  Capt exam. Could be wrong on that.

 i was relating it more to taking sgt/LT, but yeah of course it effects seniority. That is a given. I'm talking about the quality of supervisor.

Personally, I think questions should be weighted themselves. Uniform appearance questions should not have the same value as use of force. Just my 0.02c.

 Yeah, i absolutely agree, testing absolutely useless information on these promotional exams needs to stop. Theres a big difference in knowing what to do in an active shooter situation or how to verify a diplomat status of someone versus knowing size of NYPD letters on a raid jacket. 

Unfortunately that will never stop and there will always be tools among the test writer panel that probaky have not seen the streets in years that will write useless questions. 

As far as taking the test, I am somewhat torn about it. The expectations for executives has gotten absolutely unrealistic. The job fully expects you to sacrifice your personal life and family with contstant meetings, Zoom calls on RDOs and in many cases even vacations. 

I go to enough meetings as a Lt already and Im not sure the rank is worth sacrificing the time with my kids and my family for a 2013 Ford Taurus with 80K miles on it.
