Hopefully we start seeing classes of 125 a few times. Also remember class graduates from academy in April (650+) and again in July (980+). Theres over 1600 cops. If CAD able to keep hiring at that rate , this list will continue to move. Add in those that are heading for the door , list will move even quicker .
Seems like the city is now negotiating in bad faith with the SBA Hate or like the trustees, there should be a lawsuit for negotiating in bad faith. Either sign their contract or we wont promote anyone. Then everyone has to work more and more as the number of officers/bosses gets lower and lower. Then theyll complain and the trustees will settle due to the pressure of overworked staff.

This same issue happened a few years ago. Sergeants contract was in negotiations and the job stopped promoting for approximately 3-4 months. Once everything was settled and promotions started, the first class was 220 Sergeants. Bmoc was split into two groups to accommodate the large amount of Sergeants (Daytours and 4x12s).Hang in there, big promos will make up for lost times!

2017 List was 2640 long, made it to the end. Many more people are leaving from the hiring boom of early 2000. I would worry if youre after 3,000. No way our list made it to 2640 & this wont. But what are you suing for? Just because a list of 4000 is generated doesnt mean the whole list is subject to promotion. The only thing thats guaranteed is that the list is active for 4 years before promoting from a new list. If the city slows down promotions, they can do whatever they want.
There's a reason they curved it heavily and had anyone with a 61 or higher to pass. Most of those in the 3000's and all of those in the 4000's originally failed, so you have no basis to sue.
If you're 3000 and above, be positive that you may make it. If you don't, just study harder for the next exam. I always tell people to study to score high not "just pass".

Good morning to all of you. I do not often weigh in on this message board as it is not my rank and doesn't generally concern me. However, I see a lot of bad information being passed around, and I remember what it was like to be in the dark about how our job truly works regarding promotions, and to only have rumor and speculation to go off of. I want to give clarity to a few things impacting your current list. Some of the things I say may sting, some of them may validate you...but you can take what I am saying to the bank. I notice that many of you (by the things you post) clearly don't have 15 years or better on the job and so you lack historical context. Let me give you an honest and thoughtful assesment of a few topics being discussed here. If all you do is hear bullsh*t all day, I'm confident that you can immediately recognize the truth when you hear it. Please pay attention.
1. At any given time, the job has roughly around 4k sgts (give or take). Your current list exceeds the total Sgt head count for the entire dept. It would not be possible under ANY metric that EVERY sgt in the dept would be replaced in 4 years. Even with attrition.
2. While it IS true that the 2017 Sgt list had over 2600 eligibles...everyone was promoted due to an EXTRAORDINARY circumstance...covid. That list was extended an entire extra year (which wont happen again). For historical context...consider where that list was AT the four year mark from the day they started promoting off it and that should be your realistic mark give or take 150 to 250 names.
3. Lists HAVE been cut before. The most recent list to be cut was the 2008 Lieutenants list. It reached the 4 year mark..and everyone not promoted yet was chopped.
4. After the debacle of the "research questions" on the 130 question 2013 Sgt exam...followed by the rediculous 2015 LT exam..dcas and the job got tired of a lawsuit holding up the exam everytime it was released...it lead to the birth of this severe "curving" and monster lists. The theory is that if you have a giant list...people wont sue and the list can begin moving quickly. Cutting the list is always an easy strategy as it can just be rectified with another exam. Without covid, the 2017 sgt list would have been clipped. Your 2022 exam will be clipped. Again...with no inside knowledge..use the 4 year mark of the 2017 exam as a fair bridgepoint.
5. Just delete any text that begins with "breaking news". Noone with true access to inside negotiations at the top is blasting out whatsapp messages. While promotions are at the discretion of the police commisioner, staffing headcount levels must be reasonably maintained and authotization headcount clearances come from dcas...not the job. While the timing certainly seems purposeful, it is merely a coincidence that promotions have stalled for Sgts due to headcount not being drastically short. It will catch up and resume regardless of ongoing contract disputes.
I hope some or all of this was helpful. Good luck to you on your journey and remember to disengage from the rumor mill and try to help each other with facts and good information. Your times will all come. If you have a rediculous list number, don't dispair. There will be another exam announced by the end of this year-beginning of next year for some time in 2026. Take care and be well.

Thank you very much for this info it was very helpful. In your opinion by what you have seen realistically up to what list number do you think will be safe??
Hello everyone. I can confirm 100 percent of everything that was posted above. Just fyi I have worked on numerous tests so I do have a more inside view of the process in place now. The law firm obtained by Dcas specializes nationwide in civil service testing. Actually so much they pushed to create board testing like done in other agencies. I dont know if nypd or Dcas shit that down but realistically it would not work for the size of our dept. I can tell you with each test theres a matrix that is utilized to create the list. He would not tell us what the factors are. I do believe they look at metrics such as how many Sgts most likely needed, gender/race breakdown of questions wrong, overall difficulty of question based on percentage who get it wrong. All these things go into creating the list and basically assigning a value point wise for each question. So question 1 could be worth 1 pt and question 2 .75 points. Hence why you see some wacky math. To be honest things have been very fair lately compared to 2013 to 2015 tests. I do know why a bunch of those tests went south and thats a convo for another day, but if things stay the same I think everyone studying in future should have confidence in the process. Just understand the current system passing does not equal promotion and in civil service law that is just the facts
