This all means nothing once the SBA settles everyone will be adjusted regardless of what new SGT are making right now. Getting promoted before the contract is what is key. The SBA is meeting today so we will see what comes out of it.

The SBA also sent out Emails to all those on the new SGT list explaining that as of right now there is a pay disparity and encouraging some to consider deferring the promotion until this is resolved. I dont see this lasting many will defer and they wont promote what they need and want.

depending on your score you might not have to. If you are 300 or below maybe the deferral should apply. But more than 300 I am sure a fix will be in by then. you are good watcher no worries.

Dear Prospective Sergeant,

Congratulations on successfully passing the competitive civil service test and being placed on the Promotion to Sergeant list. You should be both proud of and excited about your accomplishment. Being a New York City Sergeant can be one of the most challenging but fulfilling positions in all of law enforcement.

Achieving a promotion to Sergeant is not easy. You faced tremendous competition and will experience a difficult transition. As a Police Officer or a Detective, you are a worker. As a Sergeant, you are both a worker and a supervisor. You will now be called upon to answer radio runs as you did previously, but seconds later you will be called upon to be the Boss.

No other rank in this Department wears both hats like Sergeants do. My father, who joined the Department almost 60 years ago, always said, Sergeants run the Job, a saying that still rings true today.

You are now in a position to choose to become frontline supervisors in charge of policing the most culturally, ethnically, economically, and politically diverse city in the world. You will be called upon to make split second decisions that could make the difference between life and death. Your decisions can have long-term, life-changing ramifications for the officers you supervise, as well as the public you serve.

Your actions will be critiqued and second-guessed by your superiors, as well as elected officials and the media. If you are involved in a controversial incident, your actions or inactions will be broken down frame by frame and second by second.

With this amount of responsibility, you would think that your employer, the City of New York, would recognize and fully appreciate the enormous magnitude of your new job responsibilities. You would assume that the City would compensate you accordingly for achieving this hard-earned and well-deserved promotion.

Sadly, and inexplicably, that is not the case. As things stand now, depending on your promotion date, you will earn between $15,000 and $25,000 less than the Police Officers or Detectives that you will be supervising. This disparity does not even include overtime, which is usually less accessible for Sergeants. It is also possible that someone who has a higher list number than you and is promoted 6 months after you will be earning more than you.

You must be thinking How is that possible? I passed a competitive test, and will be assuming a greater workload, more responsibility, and increased scrutiny and I am being paid less?

These egregious disproportions are a result of what is called attrition bargaining. This municipal sleight of hand makes New York City the only place in the free world where a law enforcement promotion comes with a decrease in pay.

As SBA President, it is my duty to be straight and honest with you, regardless of whether the news Im delivering is good or bad. As happy and proud as I am for you, I urge you to seriously consider whether accepting the promotion to Sergeant and/or the timing of the promotion is most beneficial for you and your family.

I assure you that the SBA is doing everything in its power to rectify this unfortunate situation. If this promotion is going to cause financial hardship to you and your family, or there are other areas of concern, it might be worth considering other options at this time. The City and the Department expect a lot from you. One thing they should not expect is for you to take a cut in pay, especially when it is directly related to a promotion.

 You're right.  However, for a few months cops will be making more than Sergeants.  Some people may be depending on that money to pay mortgage/rent or other bills. So it really depends on a person's financial situation.  For some people it may make sense to hold off on the promotion. And also remember at any moment contract negotiations can stall. Meaning, SBA raises may take longer than expected.

Not since the last contract. You stay on your step until you do the required amount of years for that step. The exception is in the scenario that the SBA doesnt settle by August 1st, then all classes will go straight to top pay until contract is settled.

The exact language in the newest SGT contract regarding the steps:

An employee shall advance one increment step annually on the anniversary date of the employees appointment to the class of the positions occupied. However, if the police department, in its discretion chooses to appoint a sergeant at a salary step other than 1st Step, then the employee shall remain at that step until the requisite time has passed to advance in the schedule. For example, if an employee is initially appointed at the 2nd Step, he/she shall not advance to the 3rd Step until the second anniversary date.

 Not true. You have 2 options.  You can take the $980 uniform allowance in a check or you can opt to provide receipts to be reimbursed up to $980. I guess for tax purposes someone may decide to itemized things.

The new policy is that the union pays out the uniform allowance to you instead of the city directly, so its not taxed. Everyone is eligible because you pay more then $980 a yr in union dues. You just have to make sure to fill out the form.

Seems as though the SBA is happy with the 14.25% over 4 years but arent happy with the non-adjusted steps for Non-Top Pay Sgts. Obviously the SBA are going to try to get this fixed but I dont think theyre willing to sacrifice the %% & would rather sell out all those promoted after 1/30/22. SBA is just preparing all those with less than a year on & all those about to get promoted that, well, you wont make more then a PO for now. The issue is, theres far more who would vote YES than NO. So Sergeants will have to sue NYC for the adjustment of SBA dont get it done. Itll be a win but its surely a delay in raises. Also, typically a Sgt is making about 10k thru the door than a PO. But it never states how much more, just that a Sgt needs to make more, so there is a point in this new contract that a Sgt does make more, by like hundreds or a thousand. Shitty position for all those promoted after 1/30/22, myself included.

Is there that much of a difference between pre and post 2022 contract sergeants? I know they added an extra pay step, but why would this situation affect non top pay sergeants differently before and after 1/2022?

Right now base is 96,000
Cops Base after this August will be 105,000
Next year it will be 109,000

That means new SGT will need to be at least at around 115,000-119,000 base
It is a big difference if You get promoted in 3 months after contract gets settled and your new starting pay is around 115,000 and every other SGT promoted after 01/2022 will still be at 96,000
Thats the issue that the SBA is facing right now

I'm trying to follow the logic in this thread, but this happens every time the PBA settles a contract and Sgts end up ok. I don't think anyone is losing any money. In the past, doesn't the city just bump everyone up to a step right above cops max base? Wasn't this the case after the 2017 PBA contract? I could have sworn I remember sgts who weren't top pay that got boosted right after the fact.

But this brings up a good question: Are promotions suppose to be more money by law, or is it just some long held unsupported belief?

But to question what Taketheday said: there are still sergeants who are at ~96,000 who have several years in rank. How does this not affect them the way it will affect new promotees? Why is it that a sergeant making 96,000 now out the gate will be treated any different than a sergeant with a year in rank making 96,281?

 The answer is the SBA is not happy with the offer from the city and is making a weak attempt at scaring the city by scaring the soon to be promoted. Does this kind of nonsense happen with cops? No. They get hired, they get a raise, and it works out for them because they are grandfathered into the system. Cops dont lose money, they dont switch pay steps around on them. Why is this even an issue for us. Really, can someone even explain this beyond this being a scare tactic by the SBA?

 Currently, the PBA raises arent active yet and so if you get promoted now, you will go to step 1 on the current pay scale. After the PBA raise goes into affect, then any new sgts will go a step higher than the new PBA base pay, thus they will make more than sgts promoted now. Sgts on the current steps will not be jumped to appropriate step, and will make less than cops and new sgts in certain situations.

As the post above stated, the email was more of a negotiation tactic. SBA is saying they are trying to work out the discrepancies.
