Ive talked to sgts that have been promoted off our list and so far none of them are happy. Im hearing the amount of work and stress they are enduring is to much. One told me he gets to work early and stays past his eot everyday to get work done. No OT at all smh. I was told be careful what you wish for. No wonder theres a mass exodus!!!

sgt will always be the most demanding rank. the first year as one will also be toughest. no surprise there
On the one hand, with all the speculation we have on this forum, no one has leaked anything about a huge uptick in promotions.
On the other hand, I doubt DCAS would go through all the trouble to clear all those names for nothing. I doubt DCAS is motivated enough to do much of anything.
Was there a big hiring spree 20 years ago this year? Im assuming its a preparation for a mass exodus. Maybe they dont necessarily have BMOCs planned, but in the event everyone starts jumping ship they will be prepared.
Anyone with a 925,926,927 tax is up for retirement in 2020. It sounds like a lot but compared to the hiring they did 25-30 years ago its nothing. I agree dcas wouldnt just do that for fun but theres no logical reason to clear that far
Current attrition is 5.7% steady. Current 2019 to 2020 fiscal budget give way for 8 extra sergeant slots. In the last 2 weeks someone mentioned 12 Sgts put in their papers and 14 LTs. How factual that is, I dont know.

I imagine that becoming a Sergeant will be like being a rookie cop all over again. During my first year, or two I was always stressed out, because I was learning everything from scratch. I am expecting that level of stress again, but every boss I have spoken to say being a Sergeant is ultimately better tjan being a Cop.
Being a Sergeant is certainly better than being a cop. However, it is far more demanding than the latter so prepare yourself to be swamped with work (especially as a rookie Sgt). Arriving early to break down the roll call is the norm, leaving later to complete all the useless paperwork/49's etc. at the end of tour is also the norm. My first year or 2 as a Sgt I NEVER left early. It will suck the first year because it's going to be a HUGE transition from being a cop. Ultimately, your goal SHOULD be is to learn how to be a leader and NOT a boss and eventually become a Lieutenant, at that point it will be well worth it.
The LT rank definitely isn't what it was 5-10 years ago, but I can assure you being a LT is still much better than being a Sergeant. The best position on this job is still a LT in a good gig

self inspections are a roll of the dice...you can get an easy one, like scratching school crossing guards once a month, or get radio runs, and be doing a ton of computer work
lets not forget communications...tho once you figure them out, they're not so bad, and ccd audits, which, again, not so bad once you get used to it
body camera quarterly self inspections, quarterly evals...could probably go on
the best advice I could give is to try and not let yourself get behind on things
make the notifications on communications as soon as you get them, get the ball rolling, I usually do them while Im breaking down the roll call...if you have 3 sgts working, wack up the tour and use your time to get this stuff done ... your ops coordinator will thank you
it definitely is a lot of work but if you can avoid getting behind on it, the day to day desk officer or patrol duties arent so bad
