Happy Holidays and  a safe healthy New Year!

Here is the latest mentoring, promotional exam news:

Heres the KEY breakdown of the Operations Orders for the Mentoring Program and what it all means going forward.

O.O. 67 of 2018 (Dated Oct 31, 2018) Mentoring promotion to Sergeant

Sat/Sun RDO.

3 week temporary assignment to a PCT/TD/PSA leading up to BMOC.

o Not a guarantee of promotion.

o Could get sent back to command (if promotion class is canceled or pushed back).

Report direct to Platoon Commander/counterpart.

3 tours as Sergeants Operator, 5 tours as Assistant D.O., 3 tours with NCO Sgt, 1 with Platoon Commander, 1 with C.O./X.O., 1 with DV Sgt and 1 with Crime Analysis Sgt.

Any remaining tours done as Sgts Op and ADO no details, unless on overtime.

O.O. 68 of 2018 (Dated Oct 31, 2018) Mentoring promotion to Lieutenant

Sat/Sun RDO.

3 week temporary assignment for Sergeants who are currently in an administrative command leading up to Lt BMOC. Not a guarantee of promotion. Could get sent back

10 tours minimum as Platoon Commanders Operator, 1 with C.O./X.O., 1 with Special Ops Lt, 1 with ICO, 1 with PDS C.O., 1 with NCO Sgt (NO Desk, NO Patrol Supv). No details, unless on overtime.

O.O. 70 of 2018 (Oct 31, 2018) Mentoring promotion to Captain

Sat/Sun RDO.

3 weeks; NOT a temporary assignment, you remain assigned to your permanent command.

o NO overtime but, if it does happen, the Unscheduled Overtime Report will be processed by your permanent command.

o Mentored by a different executive each week, every effort will be made to ensure at least one of those is a C.O.

6 tours with a Duty Inspector/Captain (NOT as their driver). No Desk, No patrol, No details unless on overtime, OR unless part of the mentoring executives duties. At least 1 stat meeting (CompStat, TraffiStat, etc) and 1 large scale event if feasible (Parade, demo, etc)

Okay, those are the standards. Now this is how its been playing out;

The expected order is, Mentoring first, then BMOC, then promotion. BUT, the order has been changed up; it could be Mentoring, then promotion, and then into BMOC.

Mentoring is 3 weeks. BUT it could get cut short by a week or two. The current group of Captains appear to be heading into promotion on December 21st with just 1 week of Mentoring.

Captain and Lieutenant BMOC is 4 weeks.

Sergeant BMOC could be anywhere from 5 to 7 weeks. This current group of sergeants appears to be heading back to BMOC for one more week after promotion.

o Could involve a week of field training.

So the promotion cycle is about 9 weeks for sergeant and 7 for lieutenant.

Were not making any projections. Here are just the facts, as of December 21st, 2018

The Sergeants list, established in December 2017, has gone through almost 450 in that 1 year

o You could fit almost six, nine week long groups in a 52 week year (remember, some groups may be 8 weeks). If they keep with the pace of 75 per group, that gives you about 450 a year.

The Lieutenant list, established in May 2018, has gone through almost 220 in 7 months.

o Since there is no class in right now and there are only about 19 weeks in the new year leading up to the 1 year anniversary of that list, you could add maybe two more groups till the 1 year anniversary. At the current pace of fifty a group, were looking at maybe 320 a year.

Again, were not making any projections, were all just looking at the new reality (Mentoring) and trying to come up with some information that helps. Either way, feel free to keep in touch with any concerns, questions, ideas, etc. And remember The Keys motto; The school founded with your success in mind.

Fraternally,

John Monaghan, Paul McCormack, Kevin Ward, Jim Shea & George Mifsud.

So the sgt list will hit 1800 and the Lt list will hit 1280?

That makes no sense to me.

Hasnt this been covered numerous times? The historical average of LT promotions is 180-200 per year. There were alOT of vacancies which needed to be filled and they have been, now its slowing down. No one knows anything at all other than history. They can increase or decrease the numbers as they see fit. Judging by historical averages the whole list wont get made. No one is hoping for that however, it may in fact be a reality only time will tell and I hope all get made.

Anything can happen obviously but all i know is that no Lt list has ever promoted 800 in the departments history.

It's all about the vacancies...unless those Capt's and above leave, movement will sadly stagnate.
