50%??? So half of all sgts were hired in the last two years? Come on guy! It's actually about a quarter of the SBA, approximately 1200 of us. All issues regarding pay structure are very close to being resolved. The SBA filed thier grievance months ago. There was a delegates meeting about a week ago to discuss the issue. The most likely outcome will be that a large portion of those 1200 sgts will lose a step to top pay....so it will be 3 years to top pay instead of 4. I'd take that in a heartbeat as It would put me only 9 months away from the big raise. The other option discussed was some type of retroactive compensation. The city is willing to make some adjustment but givebacks will be necessary from the entire membership. Does a guy who is already at top pay want to give anything back for a new sgt? I dunno...remains to be seen. I was told an emergency delegates meeting could occur as quickly as within the next three weeks to resolve the entire issue. I suggest you talk to your delegate and inquire about the contents of the last delegate meeting. I believe it was 01/24 but I could be off by a few days.

doesnt matter if we make up 100%. we dont have the power to change anything! we can come up with a great solution to the pay problem n it still wont matter. we cant strike so we dont have any leverage what so ever.at the end of the day the city can do whatever they want to us and all we can do is bend over n take it up the A55. im not tryin to rain on anybodys parade its just the truth....our union really isnt a union

It's completely insane that I make less than a P.O.  And next year I can look forward to making roughly the same amount as a P.O.  Then the following year I'll make a few dollars more than a P.O.  Sweet.

actually, bumping us up a level is good news, but what we need to find out is, will we get to top pay sgt one year quicker or will they leave us at the next level for an extra year. Skipping a year to top pay, i would be happy with that.

Several weeks ago when this thread was originally posted, a deal was pretty much worked out with the city. Those promoted after April 2006 would get to top pay one year faster, perhaps get retro, or perhaps both. The entire membership would have to give something back, perhaps a chart day for example. The city however pulled the deal off the table when the SBA, along with all the other unions, fought a proposal that would in a nutshell....require us to pay more into our healthcare. Higher copays, more deductions, etc...is completely unacceptable and the SBA did the right thing in fighting the proposal. The city's response was to play hardball with us in regards to fixing the pay structure. As of right now, the deal is in limbo but hopefully will be worked out in our favor. It is a waiting game at this point.

And the above information is direct from Ed Mullins, not precinct bull****. The SBA is putting together a letter for the delegates to disseminate to the members in thier command that will outline pretty much what I just spoke about in the above post.

Higher healthcare I hear at 10% of cost. So if healthcare costs the city 8,000, your going to pay 800 dollars a year out of pocket on top of copays, and other fees the city wants you to pay. And that 8,000 or whatever number it is is only going up every year, before you know it, its cost a member 4,000 a year out of pocket to pay for healthcare.

Why should we have to give anything back to make more than a Police Officer?  WTF?  On top of the 20 bucks less per paycheck, I get NO overtime.  I hope the union says no to that B.S.  I'd rather take my lumps now and wait for top pay rather than start giving back.  It's a slippery slope.  You start with paying more into health care and who knows whats next.  See you guys at the range on my F-ing RDO. lol

Totally agree WOW. Ill suck it up the next few years making equivalent to top pay cop rather than start giving up benefits which in the end will make the jump to top pay sgt. only 5,000 if it means losing some medical benefits being pad out of pocket. Just think for new cops or any new city workers: 25 year pension, no variable supplement, having to pay a portion for medical benefits, pension being based on your BASE of your last year (OT will mean nothing for your pension). Any allure at all a city job has is going to be gone in probably a year.

Update from the SBA website...


Update on SBA grievance pertaining to Sergeants promoted after April 1, 2006

The SBA filed a grievance against the Department as soon as the PBA arbitration award was rendered and analyzed in the summer of 2008 on behalf of all sergeants who were promoted after April 1, 2006. It is our position that those sergeants are not being paid at the correct salary step because of the effects of the PBA award.

In accordance with our collective bargaining agreement, we initiated the grievance procedure at Step III, by filing with the Informal Grievance Board through the Departments Office of Labor Policy. It was the position of the Office of Labor Policy that there was no violation, misinterpretation or misapplication of the rules or procedures of the Department nor was there any violation, misinterpretation or misapplication of the current collective bargaining agreement.

Once we received this decision we proceeded to Step IV by filing an appeal with Police Commissioner Kelly. The Commissioner denied our appeal and concurred with the decision of the Informal Grievance Board.

Immediately upon receiving notice that the Commissioner had denied our appeal, we moved to Step V by filing a motion with the New York City Office of Collective Bargaining and requested an impartial arbiter to hear our case. We currently are in the process of selecting an impartial arbiter.

This issue is of paramount importance to the entire board of the SBA and we are doing everything possible to ensure that our members are treated fairly and respectfully. You will be kept apprised of all future developments as they occur. Dont hesitate to call the SBA office at 212-226-2180 with any questions or comments.
